Macron's Dangerous Escalation
Secure Scotland condemns the French President’s “advanced deterrence” nuclear strategy. Paris’ decision to increase their nuclear stockpile, as well as deploying nuclear capable aircraft to allied European nations will not bring peace and security to the Continent. This is a departure from Article VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Macron’s rationale in investing in this nuclear doctrine to ensure peace is an illogical undertaking. Rather, the implementation of the “nuclear umbrella strategy” only narrows the continent’s path, bringing it closer to a policy of destruction.
France’s ambitions to increase nuclear cooperation with Britain is excessive and escalatory. Such implementations only encourages Britain’s self-destructive dependency on weapons of mass destruction for their security. This is an incorrect approach to addressing emerging security threats. Their increasing reliance on nuclear deterrence is no answer to global tensions, nor a source of peace, rather it is a sleepwalking path to global catastrophe. Those nations that are agreeing to be part of France’s nuclear umbrella scheme would be better served by following the global majority of world states that support the complete elimination of nuclear weapons via the Treaty of Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
